Avijit Roy and his wife were attacked on Thursday in Bangladesh. His wife suffered many injuries including a severed finger and Roy a Bangladeshi-American blogger ultimately died in the hospital. Roy and his wife were attacked from behind, and the assailants used knives and machetes. According to his website Roy was a "prominent defender of the free thought movement and advocate for atheism, science and metaphysical naturalism." Roy's freedom of speech rights as a American citizen is why leading up to his death he started receiving death threats from Islamic extremists as Bangladesh is 90% Muslim and want to see people like Roy dead. Students are often harassed for having a freedom of thought and democracy at Dhakta University, the school where Roy speaks at in Bangladesh on Dhaka street where Roy was attacked. The police are investigating Islamic activists who praised Roy's death online.
